Rheumatologist Michael Abel, M.D., FACR, joined the Hill Country Memorial Medical Group in August 2018. Dr. Abel is based in Fredericksburg and is currently the only full-time rheumatology specialist in the Hill Country.

Dr. Abel treats the full range of outpatient rheumatology conditions with a special interest in rheumatoid arthritis and connective tissue disorders. He performs office-based joint aspirations and injections.

Dr. Abel collaborates with other medical specialties such as pulmonology, hematology/oncology and neurology to treat complex autoimmune conditions. He also collaborates with the HCM Infusion Center in Fredericksburg.

Dr. Abel has practiced rheumatology since 2000 after completing his internal medicine residency at Brooke Army Medical Center. As an internal medicine resident he discovered a knack for identifying rheumatologic conditions after diagnosing cases of lupus and scleroderma.

In 2002 he completed a rheumatology fellowship at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio and began serving as Chief of Rheumatology at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso. During his years in El Paso he held several leadership positions, ultimately serving as Deputy Commander for Quality and Safety. Dr. Abel retired in 2018 after a 29 year Army career.

Dr. Abel enjoys classical music, opera and cooking for his family. He most admires his wife for being an amazing military spouse who was recognized by the governor with the Yellow Rose of Texas Award for her volunteer work for the Army.
