Get to know your doctor

Michael Shaffer, DO, will begin practicing with the Hill Country Memorial Medical Group at the Johnson City Medical Clinic in February 2022.

Dr. Shaffer most recently saw patients in the Wise Health System in Decatur and Bridgeport, Texas. He provided both full-spectrum Family Medicine as well as Sports Medicine care. Prior to that, he served as an Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of Primary Care & Sports at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth. Before pursuing his DO, he worked extensively in various roles as a registered nurse with most of his work in the ER and ICU. His other appointments have been as Head Team Physician at the University of North Texas, Team Physician for East Carolina University, Texas Tech University, the University of Cincinnati and Director of Sports Medicine at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

Dr. Shaffer began his involvement in medicine as a nursing assistant at the age of 15 and has now spent over 40 years in the medical field. He earned his Diploma in Nursing at St. Vincent Medical Center School of Nursing in Toledo, Ohio, and his BA in Biology at the University of Texas at El Paso. He was awarded Doctor of Osteopathy from Midwestern University, completed his residency at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock and his fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. The majority of Shaffer’s physician career was spent in academics teaching the future physicians for Texas as well as states across the United States.

He enjoys providing care to patients of all ages and walks of life. He also is competent in Spanish. When not providing care to his patients, Shaffer focuses on time spent with his wife and family, cooking and taking a ride on his Harley through the open roads of the Hill Country.
