The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) uses publicly reported data to evaluate hospitals across several measures.
To help consumers easily make informed decisions about their care, CMS assigns hospitals two star ratings: the Patient Experience Star Rating, based on HCAHPS patient survey scores; and the Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating, which incorporates outcomes measures and patient experience scores.
In 2017, Hill Country Memorial was one of 19 hospitals in the nation to receive five stars for both overall hospital quality and patient experience.
Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating
In July and October 2016, CMS rated Hill Country Memorial with the highest five-star rating for overall hospital quality. The comprehensive star rating is the first of its kind for hospitals overall.
In July 2016, Hill Country Memorial was one of only 102 hospitals in the nation to receive the highest five-star rating. The following October, HCM was again a five-star-rated hospital.
CMS developed the Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating to reflect comprehensive quality information about the care provided in US hospitals. The rating system examines 64 quality measures like safety and wait times and summarizes them into a star rating.
The overall hospital quality star ratings are updated each July and December.
Patient Experience (HCAHPS) Star Rating
CMS has assigned hospitals star ratings based on patients’ experience of care since April 2015.
The Patient Experience Star Rating is based on Health Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) patient survey scores. The HCAHPS patient surveys provide a standardized survey and data collection for measuring patients’ perspectives on their care.
The patient experience star ratings are updated each April, July, October and December.
