At HCM, we have all the tools you need to set you on a course toward less pain

Knee and hip pain can have many causes, and your path to less pain will be unique to you and your pain. Once you’ve talked to your doctor and have been referred to an orthopedic specialist, HCM takes the search for the cause of your pain to the next level.

HCM’s Imaging Department relies on diverse equipment, comprehensive tests, and highly trained technologists to create images of your bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. The better the images, the more effective and efficient (and faster!) your treatment.

After reviewing your medical history and discussing your knee or hip pain with you, your orthopedic specialist may request any of the following imaging tests for you:

    • X-ray: This common imaging technique is used to assess bones for injuries and to detect infections, arthritis, and tendonitis. X-rays produce “negative” type pictures of knees and hips for diagnostic purposes.
    • Arthrogram: A step up from the common X-ray, this approach is used when a standard X-ray doesn’t show enough detail. Contrast dye is injected into the joint to expose tears and other injuries. This test is not recommended for people suffering from arthritis or joint infections.
    • MRI: A long, tube-like machine, the MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) machine uses a large magnet to create detailed pictures of bones, joints, and tissues, including cartilage, muscles, and tendons. This test allows for detailed, cross-sectional views of organs.
    • CT scan: More detailed than general X-rays, the CT scan is faster, results in greater detail in images, and relies on less radiation than other imaging tests. This means that your pain gets diagnosed more quickly and more accurately.

Other tests that your orthopedist may request include, an electromyogram (EMG) to detect nerve and muscle problems, an ultrasound, or a nuclear bone scan that can show small fractures and contusions not visible with standard X-rays.

HCM has all the imaging tools needed to ensure a safer, faster, and better approach to finding the source of your knee or hip pain. We’re committed to helping you get back to your daily activities as quickly as possible.

Your orthopedist will use test results, along with your medical history and a physical exam, to determine the cause of your pain and the appropriate treatment for you. You may be referred to HCM’s Outpatient Rehab where you’ll receive the personalized orthopedic rehabilitation plan that you need to get back on track. As well, your primary care doctor will remain involved in your care and treatment throughout this process.
